Mercedes-Benz Price Guides:

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Overview:

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is an outstanding luxury small car. It boasts some of the best interior design and performance features among its rivals, although that does mean it will tend to cost a little more than average for this class. Read on to learn about what makes it stand out and whether it is a good buy.

What's New for 2020?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is built on a design that Mercedes-Benz first rolled out for the 2015 model year. Each year has added new features as well as reshuffled the trims. In 2020, the car now has standard blind-spot monitoring in all trims and styles. All styles now come with a 10.25-inch screen for the infotainment console, which in 2019 was restricted to the upper-tier styles.

If you were planning to get a style above the sedan type and you are willing to consider blind-spot monitoring as an option instead of standard, you can likely save some money on a 2019 C-Class if you are willing to do some extra work searching for one with the feature set you want.

What are the available styles?

The C-Class has three different styles on offer. The entry-level model is the sedan. This is the type that has the new 10.25-inch display, which was only available on the upper two styles last year. The second level is the coupe style, and the top-ranked choice is the convertible. The price difference between the sedan and the convertible is about $12,000 in MSRP, so you should treat these similarly to trim levels.

What trim levels does the C-Class have in 2020?

For the C-Class, trim levels work in parallel with styles when it comes to determining the feature set, appearance, and cost of the vehicle. Each style has a performance-oriented trim called the AMG. On top of that, every combination of style and trim also has packages and optional features that you can choose to add. These range from safety and automation upgrades to comfort and style.

The Experience of Driving the 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Even among luxury small cars the C-Class stands out for the power its standard engine brings. 255 horsepower on a small car means you will be able to feel the acceleration when you open it up on the highway, and gear-shifting is seamless. It isn't quite as good at cornering as it is with acceleration.

If you choose one of the AMG trims, the upgraded engine will yield a significant power boost-- the engine for the top of the line performance convertible is rated at 503 horsepower. These models take the car from fun to outstanding in terms of the feel on the road. The performance engines really kick when they accelerate and the engine has a wonderful roar as it takes off.

Interior

Perhaps the strongest advantage the 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class has its the design and quality of the interior of the cabin. The overall feel is classic and understated with some attractive flourishes, like the design of the flip switches. The materials include wood and aluminum. The standard covering is a very good synthetic leather with two optional upgrades-- leather and Nappa leather. The look is luxurious without feeling opulent or tacky, and it is a deeply comfortable car to drive or ride in.

If there is one drawback to the interior, it is that the rear row can feel a little cramped for adults. This is particularly true of the coupe and convertible models, which have less rear space.

Cargo and Storage Space

Like the rear space, the space in the trunk of the C-Class is limited. The rear seats do fold down for more space, but at the most the sedan gets 12.6 cubic feet of room in the trunk. For the coupe and convertible, that drops to 10.5 and 8.8 depending on the features and trim choice.

Other luxury small cars offer more storage as well as more rear row room, so consider looking elsewhere if you will be traveling with multiple adults or carrying a lot of items in the back frequently.

The Fuel Efficiency of the C-Class

Among luxury small cars the C-Class does fairly well on gas. The sedan model is the most efficient: it gets 35 miles per gallon on highways and 24 in the city. If you go up to the coupe or convertible, switch to the AMG trim, or add the all-wheel drive, then the car needs more gas due to greater weight.

How to Calculate The Dealer Cost of a Mercedes-Benz C-Class:

Formula for Calculating Dealer Cost:

  • Example: Base Mercedes-Benz C-Class invoice price + the dealer Invoice price of options + destination - Holdback = Total Dealer Cost.
  • What is Holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price.

Total Dealer Cost - Rebate and Incentive + Taxes / Licensing Fees = True Dealer Cost. (You can get rebates and incentives here.)

Note: All Mercedes-Benz C-Class MSRP, invoice and dealer cost dollar figures above are approximate amounts. Prices are subject to change without notice.

A note about rebates: Most rebates are subtracted from the "on the road" figure. In most cases, you can have the rebate if you are arranging your own financing or you are paying cash. If you decide to use the manufacturer's low interest financing, you do not usually get the rebate. Ask your dealer for details.
